Wawasee will be well represented in the regional round of the state tournament, and will have a top seed at 144 after Saturday’s IHSAA Elkhart Wrestling Sectional.

After not producing a champion a week ago at the Northern Lakes Conference tournament, Wawasee had Cavan Tom win his first sectional crown in the 144-pound bracket. After a slow grinder of a first round ending in a pin, Tom ground out an 8-0 major in the semis, then a 6-2 decision over NorthWood’s Jager Bute in a slow and steady win that had Tom score singular takedowns in the first and second periods, then hold off Bute’s late attempt to rally.

The Warriors had three others in the championship round, Cam Senter falling to Jimtown’s Cole Carper in a 6-3 on a last-second takedown in the 120-pound bout, and Ethan Rodriguez also losing on a late takedown by Concord’s Drew Trigg, 11-10, at 150 pounds. Derek Morrison also made the championship round, but became the latest victim of the steamroller tour by Northridge’s Travis Henke, the undefeated Raider pinning Morrison with five seconds left in the second period.

Wawasee will also have four others needing to score an upset in the first round of the regional, but will be working just the same. Cylus Melching rallied from a first-round loss to win his next three to place third at 106, and Moses Howard also placed third at 165, losing in the semi-finals, but came back to win his last two matches. Garrett Tittle at 113 and Isaac Ruff at 126 both finished in fourth place and will face the top seeds from the West Noble sectional next week in the opening round of the regional. Mattia Melli is eligible as an alternate at 132, finishing fifth.
