It was the final dual of the season, and the final shot to posture before the second season gets underway.
And it was a near make for visiting Wawasee.
Mishawaka moved to 7-0 to run undefeated in the Northern Lakes Conference round robin, but needed a serious rally to edge the Warriors, 44-33, Wednesday night.
Missing Ethan Rodriguez, Brody Young and a 106-pounder, Wawasee came into the night already at a disadvantage against the defending NLC champs. That still didn’t stop Wawasee from taking a 33-26 lead after Gaige Boyd rolled a huge pin on Jackson Hershey. Mishawaka, however, would counter with pin, pin and pin to rally back and gain half the NLC bragging rights ahead of this weekend’s NLC Championships, which will return to Mishawaka.
Wawasee did secure sixes from Carson Nine, Derek Morrison, Kaleb Salazar and Cam Senter and got a decision from Donnie Blair to pile up its points in addition to Boyd’s pin.
The Warriors finish the round robin 2-5 overall heading into this weekend’s NLC Championships. Action at Mishawaka is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Stay tuned to social media for any updates regarding the impending weather expected to hit northern Indiana Friday evening and how it affects Saturday events.
