The IHSAA state tournament series is over, but there was one more tournament bringing high school wrestlers together for one more weekend.
The Indiana Frosh-Soph State Championships brought 370 clubs and high school programs together at the behemoth two-day tournament at Southport High School. Freshmen and sophomore boys and girls put on one more round of competition as a bookend to the high school season, and Wawasee had eight athletes competing and two placing.
Wawasee had four boys and four girls in action at the monster, seven of the eight earning at least one mat victory among their work. Notable from the tournament were a pair of placers. Sophomore Kenadi Pierce on the girls’ side took fourth place overall after a 4-2 day one that had Pierce recover from an opening loss to make the third-place match in the consolation bracket. And not surprisingly, sophomore Cavan Tom won two matches in the championship bracket before a loss and eventual seventh place finish. Tom just competed at the IHSAA State Finals a week ago, making his first appearance at the big dance.
