Traditionally, Goshen is a tough place to walk out of with a lopsided wrestling win. Thursday was no exception, however, Wawasee made quite an impression with a 58-15 statement victory over the host RedHawks at the Hawk’s Nest.
Two pins off the jump from the back of the class, started by Derek Morrison at 1:21 over David Zambrano and a quick 34-second pin from El Toro, Eleazar Vazquez, over Pilo Murillo set a tone for what was to come.
Wawasee got nine more points from a forfeit for Kaleb Salazar and a 9-3 decision from Cam Senter, pushing the advantage to 21-0 and the rout was suddenly on.
Emanuel Collazo Macias stopped the flood at 120, getting a pin, and Camden Weise, the Northern Lakes Conference runner-up at 126 a year ago, got Goshen back in it momentarily with another pin. But that was about it for the remainder of the night for the hosts as the Warriors put on some tremendous displays to close the show.
Titus Taylor, Logan Stuckman and Ethan Rodriguez all went back-t0-back-to-back with pins, and Hunter Miller followed with another clinical tech fall at 152. Carson Nine put together a first-round pin and Gavin Malone got a fight from Giani Rios-Santos before claiming a 5-1 decision to punctuate his 18th birthday.
On paper, the matchup of the night was at 182, where two semi-state qualifiers squared off. Cam Zimmerman got the early oooohs, throwing Laish Detwiler, only for Detwiler to combat the jolt with a nearfall in the second. As the two combatants wore down in the third, Detwiler stood three points ahead, and after an escape by Zimmerman cut the score to 10-8, the Wawasee senior couldn’t get a takedown as time ran out, giving this round to the Goshen junior.
“Laish is a pretty dang good kid, he’s pretty tough,” said Wawasee head coach Frank Bumgardner. “He kept his composure pretty well. Kudos to them. I thought Cameron wrestled really hard. It was a good, competitive match and they won. So they deserved to win that one.”
Donnie Blair put a bow on the night, pushing Luis Oseguera around to a 9-1 mark before securing the closing pin at 5:05 to rubber stamp the second Northern Lakes Conference win of the season.
“We looked at this on paper and thought there was potential for it to be pretty dang close,” said Bumgardner. “We come out and wrestle pretty aggressively, it was good to see from our guys for sure.”
Wawasee moves to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in the NLC. With over a week off of varsity competition now with the Concord match moved back a few days, gains will be set on improvements for a key weekend at the December Duals at the Hardwood Teepee on Dec. 17. A Duals that will include NLC matchups with both Northridge and Plymouth.
Wawasee’s JV had 10 matches to open the evening, but had just two mat wins to show for it. Dominic Brown had a pin at 1:28 over Aiden Gill and Alex Carrera held off Luis Gonzalez, 8-7, in the 195 card to show for the Warriors.
The JV Warriors will get back at it Saturday, again at Goshen, in the 48th annual Goshen JV Invite. Some of the top programs in northern Indiana will be part of the 12-team field, including Mishawaka, NorthWood, Fort Wayne Carroll, Elkhart and East Noble. Action at Goshen starts at 9 a.m.
