It was a historical day Wawasee wasn’t expecting to be part of at Saturday’s Northern Lakes Conference Championships.

For the first time in over a decade, Wawasee did not produce a NLC weight class champion at the conference tournament, hosted by Northridge at the beautiful brand new Jayco Annex Facility. Already shorthanded with both Derek Morrison and Lyam Moseman out with injuries, the Warriors struggled to 130 team points and finished sixth overall, this coming after Wawasee entered the month of January 5-0 overall. But with its sixth-place finish at Northridge, and a 5-2 mark, the Warriors finish in the middle of the pack in fourth place overall.

In Wawasee’s two appearances in championship matches, both Cameron Senter and Ethan Rodriguez were upset as top seeds in their brackets.

Senter just a few days ago beat Mishawaka’s Chance Smith by 5-1 decision in the team dual, but after two periods, Smith led 3-1 holding onto a first-period takedown. As the clock ticked on the third period, Smith worked out of bottom to get a reversal and held on for a stunning 5-2 victory on the two-time defending NLC champion.

Rodriguez had a tech fall victory over Concord’s Drew Trigg back in December, one of just two losses for the Concord star this season. The two faced off in the final, and after two periods, Rodriguez led 7-3 and was in the driver’s seat. But after an escape and takedown by Trigg, it was 7-7 and destined for overtime. There, the two sparred but nothing was settled right away, until Rodriguez was called for a stall with six seconds left, and in the same motion, Trigg worked into what was called a takedown at the buzzer and the upset for Concord.

Wawasee’s Moses Howard had the next highest finish with a third-place take in the 165 bracket, nearly rallying in the semi-finals only to come up short on a 14-12 decision to Concord’s Micah Pfeil. Howard scored a late takedown to rally past Warsaw’s Zander Moore, 9-8, in the third-place match.
