In recent seasons, Wawasee has encountered an early season loss that seems to derail momentum. Last year, a home loss to Goshen was the blemish the Warriors looked back on with wonderment. The setback saw Wawasee continue to slide in the Northern Lakes Conference, and kept head coach Jamie Salazar up at night.

The chance for redemption a year later would come at the Hawk’s Nest, where Wawasee scored the dual’s final 20 points to pull away from Goshen, 48-24.

“It was good this payback match back,” said Salazar. “Kids have been working hard. All week focusing on some key things, some things we have to improve. They are starting to click.”

After Saul Faustino-Ramirez worked into a third pin of Dalton Yoder, Goshen trailed just 28-24 after Wawasee had broken an 18-18 tie with wins from Cam Senter and Issac Ruff. All Goshen momentum ended there as Gaige Boyd picked up possibly the biggest win of the match, a 9-8 decision over Kenneth Davison that had Boyd down 7-0 after a period and needing a reversal late in the third period to grab the lead as time eventually ran out.

Cavan Tom, Ethan Rodriguez and Carson Nine all led lopsided wins and Moses Howard earned his first-ever NLC win to close out Wawasee’s second conference win of the season.

“They have to pay attention, it’s their time to shine,” Salazar said. “Everybody that stuck it out this week, they worked hard. We did a lot of key focus on things we have to improve. They are getting better, but we still have some weak spots we have to figure out.”

Derek Morrison and Lyam Moseman both scored early pins to get Wawasee on the board, Moseman returning to the lineup after missing significant time due to illness. Isaac Ruff bounced back from a tough weekend to get a pin and Garrett Tittle added a forfeit six.

Wawasee’s JV returns to Goshen Saturday for the annual Goshen JV Invite and the varsity will prep for its next NLC showdown in hosting Concord next Thursday.
