A pair of Wawasee seniors announced their intentions to continue their wrestling and academic careers with Trine University. Recently Hunter Miller and Gavin Malone both announced their commitments to the Thunder program, capping a successful 2022-23 Wawasee wrestling season.
Gavin Malone
Malone has been accepting challenges his entire life. Tuesday was no different with his public commitment to Trine.
A four-time semi-state qualifier, Malone was on the doorstep of the IHSAA State Finals twice, reaching the ticket round in East Chicago as a freshman and senior.
Malone was also a two-time sectional champion (2020, 2021) and was an All-NLC performer as a senior among his many career accolades.
Equally impressive for the senior captain was his work in the classroom, where Malone was a First-Team Academic All-State winner this year and carries a 3.9 GPA as one of the top students in his graduating class.
Hunter Miller
Miller made his announcement in April, punctuating an outstanding career at Wawasee.
The senior reached the IHSAA State Finals for the first time in February and went on to finish sixth place overall at 152 pounds, going 2-2 in his final weekend of action.
Miller was a two-time NLC champion (2021, 2022), a two-time sectional champion (2021, 2023) and four-time semi-state qualifier.
Also a high-quality student athlete, Miller carries a plus-4 GPA and is ranked among the top of his graduating class. He was named a First-Team Academic All-State as a senior and received a slew of student-athlete regards during his reign at Wawasee.
