Our weekend was full once again as both programs were on the road. The Lady Warriors loaded the bus for LaGrange to take part in the Lakeland Girls Invite while the JV Warriors brought a handful of JV wrestlers back to Goshen for entry in the 50th annual Goshen JV Invite.
In a year of firsts, the girls added more notes to the Wawasee Girls Wrestling History Book with its first-ever invitational championship loaded with individual accomplishments. Karlee Clevenger at 100 and Hadley Faroute at 110 won their first bracket championships of the season, Faroute the first of her career, as both went 4-0 in their respective groupings. Kenidi Nine (135) and Cyanna Leon (140) both lost their only matches in bracket championships, and for the first time in her career, Peyton Hohman scored a pin and earned a head-to-head win in the 135-pound class. Kenadi Pierce was third and Alex Garcia was fourth in the 170 class.
“It was all great wrestling, but I would have to say my highlight of the tournament, and I would say that all the girls and fans and coaches would agree, is Peyton Hohman’s first career victory,” said Wawasee girls wrestling head coach Miguel Rodriguez. “Not only did she get her victory but she dominated her opponent 13-1 before she received the slap of the mat for the pin fall. Our girls were going crazy. Our fans were screaming and cheering. That victory for her is one of my proudest moments as a coach.”
At Goshen, Kingston Sanchez at 157 and Brody Young at 165 both won brackets to highlight the boys action. Both young men were 3-0 in the bracket-style tournament, the first posterboard for each of them this season. Cylus Melching (113) and Kingston Brenneman (165) each were runner-ups in their respective competition.
