Wawasee senior Hunter Miller shakes hands with Wawasee athletic director Brent Doty while classmate Gavin Malone and Wawasee principal Geoff Walmer look on during the WHS winter sports awards banquet Wednesday evening in the school’s auditorium.

It was the capper to yet another successful Wawasee wrestling campaign.

Wednesday night saw the high school hold its awards banquet, both for the athletic department as a whole and the team separately.

On a broad scale, Wawasee athletic director Brent Doty honored all of the winter athletic programs, to where wrestling presented its Wawasee November Duals team championship trophy as well as its Plymouth Sectional championship trophy. Each of the tournament advancers were noted, as were All-Northern Lakes Conference and Academic All-State award winners. Senior Gavin Malone was also honored as part of the Wawasee winter sports recipients of the Warrior Way Award for service in and out of the sport.

As the awards program broke down to individual sports across the school, wrestling reintroduced its award winners along with commentary from girls coach Miguel Rodriguez on his team’s inaugural season, assistant coach Jamie Salazar on the freshman and sophomore class successes, and head coach Frank Bumgardner on the junior and senior class successes. Bumgardner also noted the history of the season, including the team obtaining its 25th sectional title, furthering the program as the winningest in school history. The team also had 10 semi-state qualifiers, four state finalists and Hunter Miller finished sixth in the state at 152 pounds. The 10 semi-staters are believed to be the most to compete for Wawasee at the semi-state level.

The three coaches then presented individual and program awards, which included the following:

All-NLC: Gavin Malone, Hunter Miller, Kaleb Salazar, Cameron Senter, Logan Stuckman

Academic All-State: Donnie Blair, Gavin Malone, Hunter Miller, Titus Taylor, Cameron Zimmerman

Most Improved Girls: Rylin Vanlaningham

Mental Attitude Girls: Brooke Catron

Outstanding Girls: Alex Garcia

Most Improved Boys: Donnie Blair

Mental Attitude Boys: Logan Stuckman

Outstanding Boys: Hunter Miller
