Another jam packed weekend of Wawasee wrestling, with the varsity hosting the December Duals and the girls over in Albion for a giant scrum at the Central Noble Invite.
Wawasee went 2-2 in its contests at the Duals while the girls had three mat champions to highlight its day on the maroon mats.

Optically, it was a messy weekend for the hosts. Two swing losses in the back ends of setbacks to Angola and Norwell started Wawasee’s day on melancholy tides, only for Wawasee to recover with Northern Lakes Conference dual wins over Plymouth and Northridge to salvage the day 2-2, but moving to 4-0 in the NLC.
Angola, one of the top teams from the Northeast Corner Conference, showed it wasn’t messing around in round one against the Warriors, pinning its first three Warrior opponents. Wawasee would gain some character in its strength, getting four pins in five matches including a stick from Chase Dennis at 182, filling in for an ill Cam Zimmerman. But Angola gained a 16-5 advantage in the next three contests, setting up a battle of Kam’s, Angola’s Straw taking down Wawasee’s Cam Senter at 2:57 for a shocking rally and a four-point win.
The Hornets would be the surprise of the Duals, going 3-1 on the day and only losing to No. 7 Norwell by eight points.
The Knights would reign supreme, backing up its lofty status with a 4-0 day, but needing a pin in its final contest to escape Wawasee in a 42-36 matchup of Class 2-A Team State contenders. The shock and swing of the loss to Norwell was at 106, where an unranked Hunter Douglas managed to get over on state-ranked No. 7 Kaleb Salazar. While Salazar showed more technical skill in the early going, Douglas stayed the course and got to the middle of the third period, got Salazar to the mat and into a cradle for a pin. Wawasee would get the six back after Senter scored an impressive pin to tie the score, but Jason Prough needed less than a minute to put away Jaxon Senter to secure the six and the dub.
Wawasee took honors in nine of the 14 spots against the Pilgrims, Hunter Miller with a nice 4-3 decision over Cadyn Smith and both Carson Nine and Titus Taylor needing under 40 seconds each to score conference pins. In a matchup bound for a rematch in January, Wesley Smith got the best of Ethan Rodriguez at 145, taking the decision, 7-1.
Two late results saved Wawasee against Ridge in the final round. A major by Colten Sutton over Jaiden Smith gave Wawasee a 32-29 lead, only for Ridge to get six back on a pin by Gray Beasley. Logan Stuckman then stepped up for the Warriors, pinning Wyland Buck 12 seconds into the second period to secure the six and the bag.
Four Warriors were undefeated on the day in their four matches – Stuckman, Miller, Gavin Malone and Donnie Blair.
Wawasee returns to action Wednesday in another home affair, hosting Concord, before looking to the Al Smith Invitational on Dec. 29-30.

at Central Noble
Wawasee once again left a girls invite with at least three champions, achieving the mark for the second consecutive weekend at the Central Noble Girls Invite.
Ciarra Rodriguez, Kenidi Nine and Alex Garcia each battled their way to perfect days in Albion, each running 3-0 with nine pins among them.
Rodriguez scored pins over Mishawaka, East Noble and Fort Wayne Carroll, the final over the Chargers’ Victoria Eviston.
Nine was able to win a rematch from last week’s Lakeland Invite, taking down East Noble’s Olivia Petrie in the final round to close out the perfect day. Nine also beat West Noble and Jimtown competitors.
Garcia once again went unbeaten, getting mat slaps over New Haven, Central Noble and Ciara Howard of Fort Wayne Wayne to close out her perfect day.
The girls will next assemble en masse Dec. 28 at the Sarah Hildebrand Invite hosted by Penn High School, a massive 41-team occasion that starts the girls state tournament series.
