The bright lights of the IHSAA State Championships have been dim at the Ford Center in Evansville for a week, but those lights were turned on at Southport High School this past weekend for the Freshman/Sophomore State tourney.

Wawasee sent seven individuals to Southport to compete, and three of those were placers at the massive bracket tournament.

Here’s how our seven did, listed with their weight class and placing, if applicable.

Karlee Clevenger, 100, DNP

Clevenger went 1-2 in her work, getting an opening round pin against Franklin Central’s Gracie Meeks, but fell in her next two contests.

Kenidi Nine, 135, 3rd

Nine worked through a 4-1 day to take third overall in an impressive two-day tourney. Opening with a pair of pins, Nine couldn’t solve Charisma Lawrence of Merrillville, who would go on to be the weight class champ. Nine rallied with two decisions, a 7-5 win over Mooresville’s Naveah Hultgren to finish on top of the consolation bracket.

Naviya Leon, 140, 7th

Leon would pinball through her bracket, sandwiching losses with wins to finish 3-2 on the day. The Lady Warrior opened with a pin, but lost to drop out of the championship bracket, only to come back with a pin, loss, and closed with an 8-7 decision over Emersyn Adkins of Tipton to take seventh overall.

Garrett Tittle, 106, DNP

Tittle had a tough weekend, losing both of his matches in first round pins on both sides of the bracket.

Cavan Tom, 126, DNP

Tom also finished his weekend 0-2, but both were in heartbreaking fashion in sudden victory losses.

Cameron Senter, 126, DNP

The day started off well for semi-stater, but didn’t finish as smoothly. Senter won his first two matches by decision to make the round of 16, but lost to eventual champion Dominic Brown of Center Grove, then fell in his next match to finish 2-2 on the weekend.

Derek Morrison, 190, 7th

Morrison also opened 2-0 wrestling down at 190 for the first time as a regular, and closed 2-1 in a busy weekend. Morrison started off with a pin and a decision to make the round of 16, but a loss also had Morrison fighting in the consoles. Morrison would start the consoles with a decision win and a loss, then closed with a 7-3 win over Landon Reynolds of Penn.
